Σκηνή από την ταινία The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a 1910 American silent fantasy film and the earliest surviving film version of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz , made by the Selig Polyscope Company without Baum's direct input. It was created to fulfill a contractual obligation associated with Baum's personal bankruptcy caused by The Fairylogue and Radio-Plays , from which it was once thought to have been derived. It was partly based on the 1902 stage musical The Wizard of Oz , though much of the film deals with the Wicked Witch of the West, who does not appear in the musical. Plot In Kansas, Dorothy and the cow are chased into the cornfield by the mule, and the farmhands draw their muskets at the beast. Dorothy discovers in the field that the family scarecrow is alive. The Scarecrow builds a haystack and warns Dorothy and the farm animals to take cover. A cyclone appears overhead and carries the haystack away, thus letting it fal...

Lyman Frank Baum Lyman Frank Baum (May 15, 1856 – May 6, 1919), better known by his pen name L. Frank Baum , was an American author chiefly known for his children's books, particularly The Wonderful Wizard of Oz . He wrote thirteen novel sequels, nine other fantasy novels, and a host of other works (55 novels in total, plus four "lost works", 83 short stories, over 200 poems, an unknown number of scripts, and many miscellaneous writings), and made numerous attempts to bring his works to the stage and screen. His works anticipated such century-later commonplaces as television, augmented reality, laptop computers ( The Master Key ), wireless telephones ( Tik-Tok of Oz ), women in high risk, action-heavy occupations ( Mary Louise in the Country ), and the ubiquity of advertising on clothing ( Aunt Jane's Nieces at Work ). Childhood and early life Baum was born in Chittenango, New York in 1856 into a devout Methodist family. He had German, Scots-Irish, ...

William Nicholas Selig William Nicholas Selig (March 14, 1864 – July 15, 1948) was a pioneer of the American motion picture industry. Biography Selig was born and raised in Chicago in a Bohemian-Polish immigrant family. After starting as a furniture upholsterer, he worked as a vaudeville performer and produced a traveling minstrel show in San Francisco while still in his late teens. One of the actors was Bert Williams, who went on to become a leading African-American entertainer. In 1894, Selig saw Thomas Edison's Kinetoscope at an exhibition in Dallas, Texas. He returned to Chicago, opened a small photography studio and began investigating how he might make his own moving pictures without paying a patent fee to Edison's company. Selig reportedly found a metalworker who had unwittingly repaired a Lumière brothers motion picture camera and, with his help, developed a working system. In 1896, Selig founded the Selig Polyscope Company in Chicago, one of th...
